Berthoud, Colo. – A barricaded suspect was arrested near Carter Lake early Monday after an alleged assault prompted a multi-hour law enforcement response in Larimer County.

According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call just after midnight reporting an argument that allegedly escalated into a physical assault. The caller said the suspect repeatedly pushed and punched another man, knocking him unconscious, before leaving the scene in a vehicle. The suspect was also reported to be intoxicated and driving on a revoked license.

Deputies and medical personnel responded, and the injured victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators determined the two men knew each other and quickly identified the suspect as a resident south of Carter Lake.

When a deputy attempted contact at the suspect’s property, the suspect allegedly ran toward outbuildings and hid inside. Authorities said he ignored verbal commands, prompting a response from the Larimer County All Hazards/Crisis Response Team. A K9 unit searched the area, but access limitations prevented entry into the structure.

Chemical irritants were deployed in an effort to encourage surrender, but officials said the suspect continued to hide. Deputies then obtained a warrant and began clearing multiple outbuildings on the property.

The suspect was located and taken into custody without injury at approximately 6:15 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

He was booked into the Larimer County Jail on multiple charges, including Second Degree Assault (felony), Harassment – Shove/Strike/Kick (misdemeanor), Obstructing a Peace Officer (misdemeanor), and Driving Under Restraint (traffic offense). All charges are allegations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The overnight operation concluded before sunrise and did not result in additional injuries.

For commuters and nearby residents, the response brought a heavy law enforcement presence to the Carter Lake area during early morning hours.
