Raleigh, North Carolina – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across much of central and eastern North Carolina through 10 a.m. Thursday, with icy travel conditions possible during the morning commute along major corridors including Interstates 40, 440, 85, and 95.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, areas of rain, freezing rain, and freezing drizzle will continue into the morning hours before tapering off later today. Forecasters say ice accumulations are expected to remain below one-tenth of an inch, but even small amounts could cause hazardous conditions on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.
The greatest risk for slick travel is along and east of Interstate 95, including communities such as Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, and Fayetteville. Temperatures early Thursday morning are expected to remain in the upper 20s, allowing ice to persist on colder surfaces before gradual improvement later in the morning.
The National Weather Service warns that hazardous travel is possible, particularly for drivers traveling during peak commute times. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution on ramps and elevated roadways along I-40 through Raleigh and Durham, as well as I-85 and US-64.
Conditions are expected to improve later today as precipitation ends, cloud cover decreases, and temperatures rise into the mid-30s to lower 40s by the afternoon. A light breeze will also help with drying, reducing the risk of additional icing.
Tonight, skies will become partly cloudy, with temperatures falling back into the upper teens to mid-20s, though no additional precipitation is expected.
For commuters, students, and early-morning workers, officials recommend allowing extra travel time and remaining alert for isolated slick spots even after precipitation ends.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring local forecasts and advisories until conditions fully improve later this morning.
