Chicago, Illinois – Areas of freezing drizzle and mist are moving across northern Illinois early Monday, creating the potential for slick and hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service Chicago office.

Forecasters report that freezing drizzle is most likely during the early morning hours, with the greatest risk around and north of Interstate 88. In these areas, a light glaze of ice may form on roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and other untreated surfaces. While ice accumulations are expected to be minimal, even a thin glaze can significantly reduce traction.

The National Weather Service identifies two primary impact zones. In the darker shaded areas, localized hazardous travel is possible due to icy road surfaces. In the lighter shaded areas, slippery conditions are most likely on untreated walking surfaces and parking lots. Major travel corridors potentially affected include Interstate 88 near DeKalb and Aurora, Interstate 90 near Rockford, Interstate 80 near Joliet, and surrounding state and local roadways.

Motorists traveling early Monday are urged to check road conditions before departing, reduce speed, and allow extra stopping distance. Drivers are also advised not to rely on cruise control when roads may be icy and to remain alert for sudden changes in traction, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The freezing drizzle threat is expected to diminish by mid-morning as temperatures slowly rise above freezing. However, lingering slick spots may persist longer in shaded or untreated areas.

This weather setup may be especially impactful for morning commuters, delivery drivers, and school transportation routes operating before sunrise.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local transportation agencies as conditions evolve through the morning hours.
