Virginia – The cold hits hard the moment you step outside. Wind cuts through layers, breath crystallizes, and the air stings exposed skin across southwest Virginia this morning.

In the New River Valley, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for Blacksburg and surrounding counties through early afternoon. Temperatures near 9 degrees combine with steady northwest winds, driving wind chills as low as 15 to 16 degrees below zero. Even brief exposure can turn dangerous quickly.

Roads look quiet under sunshine, but cold pavement creates hidden hazards. Melted frost refreezes fast, especially on bridges and shaded stretches near U.S. Route 460. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance during early travel.

The afternoon stays cold despite sun. Highs struggle to reach the upper teens, and the wind keeps it feeling much colder. Conditions ease slightly tonight, though lows drop back near 7 degrees. Frostbite risk continues for anyone outdoors without full winter gear.

By Monday, a modest recovery begins. Sunshine returns, and highs climb into the low 30s. The cold lingers after dark, with Monday night lows near 18. That sets the stage for the next change.

Attention turns to Tuesday and Wednesday. Clouds increase Tuesday, followed by a chance of rain and snow late Tuesday night as temperatures hover near freezing. By Wednesday, light snow or a rain-snow mix becomes possible. Even minor accumulation could affect travel if precipitation develops quickly or refreezes after sunset.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook keeps much of the East colder than normal into early February. The Great Lakes remain nearly half frozen, reinforcing cold air supply across the Appalachians. Meteorologists continue watching additional systems later this week that could extend winter impacts.

Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors today. Traveling midweek? Let us know what conditions look like where you are.
