North Carolina — Snow swirls sideways under streetlights, and wind rattles signs along the Crystal Coast. Roads glaze quickly as heavy snow and blowing gusts push visibility down across Carteret County.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Morehead City through midday. Snow totals of 3 to 7 inches are possible, with locally higher amounts in heavier bands. Northwest winds gust up to 45 mph, creating whiteout bursts and drifting snow, especially on exposed roads like U.S. Route 70.
Travel remains dangerous this morning. Slippery pavement and reduced visibility make even short trips risky. Emergency managers urge drivers to delay travel where possible. If you must go out, slow down and keep extra distance.
Compounding the storm, an Extreme Cold Warning continues into Monday morning. Temperatures hover near 20 degrees, but wind chills plunge to 15 degrees below zero at times. Frostbite can develop quickly on exposed skin. Dress in layers, cover your face, and bring pets indoors.
Snow tapers later today as skies slowly clear. Winds ease this evening, but cold tightens its grip. Lows fall near 7 degrees, allowing melted snow to refreeze. Flash freezing will create slick spots overnight and early Monday, even where roads were previously cleared.
Monday brings sunshine but little warmth. Highs reach the mid-30s, though shaded areas stay icy. Monday night turns bitter again, with lows near 14 degrees.
Attention then shifts to midweek. By Tuesday night into Wednesday, rain becomes likely as temperatures climb toward the upper 40s. That thaw may help clear remaining ice, but wet roads return.
Nationally, the Great Lakes sit nearly 50 percent frozen, helping reinforce cold air across the East. Meteorologists continue tracking additional February systems that could bring more winter threats.
Stay weather-aware and check road conditions before traveling. How much snow did you measure in your neighborhood?
