Johnstown, PA – Residents in parts of western Pennsylvania are urged to take immediate precautions as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through Sunday afternoon, bringing life-threatening wind chills across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, Cambria and Somerset counties are expected to see wind chills as low as -22 to -23 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The warning remains active until 1 p.m. Sunday.
Weather officials warn that frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, even faster in windy conditions. Prolonged exposure may also lead to hypothermia, especially among children, older adults, and those without adequate shelter.
In Cambria County, including the city of Johnstown, the Extreme Cold Warning was upgraded Saturday evening as temperatures and wind combined to create dangerously low wind chill values. Somerset County remains under a continued warning as the cold air mass holds firm across the Laurel Highlands.
Emergency officials are urging residents to remain indoors whenever possible until conditions improve. Those who must go outside should dress in multiple layers, including gloves, hats, scarves, and face coverings to protect exposed skin. Officials note that several thin layers provide better insulation than a single heavy coat.
Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without reliable heat, as overnight conditions are expected to remain bitterly cold.
The extreme cold is expected to ease gradually Sunday afternoon, but officials stress that dangerous conditions may persist longer in higher elevations and wind-exposed areas.
