Newport, North Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for North Carolina’s Outer Banks as heavy snow and extreme winds could create blizzard-like, life-threatening conditions through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, 4 to 8 inches of snow are expected on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island, with locally higher amounts possible. Wind gusts up to 65 mph may accompany the storm. The warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday through 7 p.m. EST Sunday.

Communities under the warning include Ocracoke, Rodanthe, Frisco, Buxton, Avon, and Hatteras Village.

Forecasters warn that visibilities may drop below one-quarter mile due to falling and blowing snow, with whiteout conditions expected at times. Travel may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, particularly during periods of strongest wind and heaviest snowfall.

Strong winds could also lead to tree damage, power disruptions, and prolonged road closures, especially along exposed stretches of Highway 12. Emergency response and snow removal efforts may be significantly limited during the height of the storm.

Residents and visitors are strongly urged to delay all travel if possible. Those who must travel should use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Current road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.

Winter storms of this intensity are rare for the Outer Banks and can isolate barrier island communities for extended periods. Ferry service interruptions and access restrictions are possible through the weekend.

Residents are advised to closely monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials as conditions rapidly evolve.
