Wellton, AZ – A routine traffic stop along Interstate 8 in Yuma County led to a major drug seizure last week, taking more than 167 pounds of methamphetamine off Arizona roadways.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), a state trooper conducted a traffic stop at approximately 10:09 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, near eastbound Interstate 8 at milepost 21 in Wellton. The vehicle, a white 2011 BMW X5, was stopped for multiple moving violations.

During the stop, the trooper observed indicators of possible criminal activity, DPS said. A subsequent consent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 167.55 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a false floor compartment.

Authorities arrested one suspect at the scene. DPS identified the individual as 26-year-old Alex Peres of Baja California, Mexico, who was taken into custody and booked into the Yuma Federal Detention Facility.

Peres allegedly faces charges related to the possession and transportation of dangerous drugs for sale. Officials emphasized that all charges are allegations until proven in court.

The investigation was supported by District Four Highway Patrol and the Yuma Narcotics Squad, highlighting what DPS described as effective interagency cooperation aimed at disrupting illegal drug trafficking corridors through southern Arizona.

Officials say Interstate 8 is a known route for narcotics trafficking due to its proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border and its direct connection to larger metropolitan areas across the Southwest.

DPS praised the troopers involved, stating the seizure represents a significant disruption to the illegal drug trade and helps keep dangerous substances out of local communities.

The incident is listed under DPS Incident Number I26004262.
