Salisbury, Maryland – Confidence is increasing that eastern Maryland will see impactful winter weather this weekend as a strengthening coastal storm moves closer to the Mid-Atlantic. The Eastern Shore now sits in one of the highest-risk zones, with a strong chance of snow and hazardous travel conditions developing from Saturday into Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service, probabilities for at least moderate winter weather impacts have climbed to around 70% across much of eastern Maryland, including the Eastern Shore and areas along the Chesapeake Bay. Forecasters indicate snow is the primary concern, though brief mixing could worsen road conditions, especially overnight.
Travel impacts are expected to be widespread if current trends hold. Routes such as U.S. 50, U.S. 13, and MD-404 could become snow-covered or icy late Saturday into early Sunday. Bridges and low-lying roadways near the Bay are particularly vulnerable as temperatures hover near freezing. Maryland State Highway Administration crews are preparing for treatment operations ahead of the storm.
Residents are urged to complete preparations before Saturday, including charging devices, securing necessary supplies, and avoiding non-essential travel during periods of heavier precipitation. Those with weekend travel plans should closely monitor road conditions and advisories.
This system is expected to remain dynamic, with warnings or advisories likely as confidence continues to grow. Weather officials say additional alerts may be issued as the storm unfolds through Sunday, Feb. 1.
