Shreveport, Louisiana — A brief period of milder weather across northwest Louisiana Wednesday will give way to renewed hazards by nightfall, with freezing fog and refreezing concerns impacting travel along Interstate 20, I-49, and surrounding roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, high temperatures Wednesday will climb into the 40s, helping to melt portions of lingering ice from earlier cold weather. However, temperatures are expected to drop back below freezing tonight, with overnight lows falling into the lower to mid-20s across much of the region.
A Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect through 11 a.m. Wednesday for parts of Northwest Louisiana, as well as areas of northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, and southwest Arkansas. Visibilities may be reduced to one mile or less, particularly during the morning commute. Motorists are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights.
As fog lifts later in the morning, conditions should improve temporarily. However, forecasters warn that any melted ice or moisture on roadways may refreeze tonight, leading to slick conditions after sunset and into early Thursday morning. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways along I-20, I-49, U.S. 59, and U.S. 71 are especially vulnerable.
The National Weather Service notes that refreezing may occur quickly due to cold pavement temperatures, even if roads appear wet rather than icy during the day. Drivers traveling late Wednesday night or early Thursday should be alert for black ice.
Residents are urged to take precautions by protecting pipes, bringing pets indoors, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Space heaters should be used cautiously and kept away from flammable materials.
Commuters, students, and early-shift workers should plan for changing road conditions from morning fog to nighttime refreeze and monitor updated forecasts and advisories as conditions evolve.
