Light snow is possible across western and central Kansas Friday as a fast-moving system crosses the region, with minor but noticeable travel impacts possible.

According to the National Weather Service office in Dodge City, a quick-moving weather system will move south from Nebraska Friday afternoon, bringing light snow primarily to northern Kansas before spreading into central portions of the state during the evening. Snowfall accumulations are expected to remain under one inch, but even small amounts could briefly affect road conditions.

The highest chances for snow are forecast along and north of I-70, including areas near Hays, with lighter snow extending south toward Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend, and Pratt. Travel corridors such as I-70, US-50, US-83, and I-135 may see brief reductions in visibility and slick pavement, especially on untreated roads.

Forecasters emphasize that this is not a major winter storm, and widespread disruptions are not expected. However, timing may overlap with the Friday evening commute, when pavement temperatures could be cold enough for snow to briefly stick. Drivers may notice short-lived slowdowns as snow showers pass through.

Behind the system, colder air will return late Friday night into Saturday morning, with below-zero wind chills possible early Saturday. Any moisture left on road surfaces could refreeze overnight, increasing the risk of slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways.

The National Weather Service advises motorists to remain cautious during Friday afternoon and evening travel, allow extra stopping distance, and monitor updated forecasts in case snow coverage shifts. Even light snow can create localized hazards when combined with cold temperatures.

No significant additional precipitation is expected immediately after this system moves through, but winter conditions will continue across Kansas. Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware as colder air settles back into the region heading into the weekend.
