Columbia, South Carolina – Wind chills in the single digits will grip the Midlands overnight as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 10 a.m. Tuesday, with air temperatures plummeting into the mid-teens after dark.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, dangerously low temperatures are expected across the Central Savannah River Area and the Midlands, with lows between 10°F and 20°F and wind chills falling as low as 7°F. The advisory covers areas including Lexington, Columbia, Aiken, Sumter, and Augusta.

Officials urge residents to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes. Emergency management recommends assembling a winter kit, charging devices, and checking on elderly neighbors or those without reliable heat. Pets should be brought indoors and provided with warm shelter, while pipes should be insulated or left to drip to prevent freezing.

Lexington County deputies are encouraging use of the South Carolina Emergency Management Division app for real-time updates and safety resources.

The advisory remains in place through 10 a.m. Tuesday, but additional warnings may be issued if temperatures remain dangerously low into midweek.
