Raleigh, North Carolina – Dangerous weather conditions are impacting central North Carolina on Monday, with hazardous travel this morning followed by dangerously cold temperatures tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect tonight through early Tuesday morning, as wind chills are expected to drop into the single digits above zero, with some areas falling as low as 5 degrees below zero, especially across the northern Piedmont and parts of the Coastal Plain.
Forecasters warn that hazardous travel conditions may redevelop tonight, as cold air moves back in and lingering moisture refreezes on roadways. Slick spots are possible on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads, particularly during the overnight and early morning commute Tuesday.
The coldest wind chills are expected late tonight through shortly after sunrise Tuesday, increasing the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Temperatures will remain well below normal through Tuesday morning before gradually improving later in the day.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in multiple layers, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Drivers should use caution overnight and early Tuesday, allowing extra time for travel and watching for icy patches.
Officials stress the importance of staying weather-aware as dangerous cold and travel hazards continue across the region into Tuesday morning.
