Pueblo, Colorado – Dangerously cold wind chills are affecting southern Colorado early Monday, with subzero wind chill values across the plains and the San Luis Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. MST, as light winds combine with air temperatures in the single digits above and below zero to produce wind chills as low as 24 degrees below zero in parts of the region. Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin during this period.

The coldest conditions are expected through mid-morning, particularly before sunrise. While winds are relatively light, the extreme cold is enough to pose a risk to anyone spending extended time outdoors, including outdoor workers and early commuters.

Conditions are expected to improve later this morning, with temperatures rebounding into the 30s and 40s by this afternoon as sunshine increases and the arctic air mass begins to retreat. Despite the improvement, temperatures will remain below seasonal averages for late January.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, fully cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors until conditions improve. Officials also recommend checking on vulnerable individuals and ensuring heating systems are functioning properly.

Cold weather precautions remain important across the region as another cold morning is possible later this week, though not as extreme as Monday morning.
