Rhode Island – A prolonged winter storm brought significant snowfall across Rhode Island from January 23 through January 26, producing near-record accumulations and creating hazardous travel conditions statewide.

According to compiled storm reports, the highest snowfall total reported in Rhode Island was 16.7 inches in Providence, making it the snowiest observed location in the state during the multi-day event. The total places the storm among the more impactful winter weather events of the season for Rhode Island’s urban corridor.

Snow fell steadily over multiple days rather than in a single intense burst, allowing accumulations to build gradually and extending impacts on roads and infrastructure. The prolonged nature of the storm contributed to widespread slick roads, reduced visibility, and slow travel, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

Major routes, including Interstates 95, 195, and Route 10, experienced periods of difficult travel as snow-covered lanes and plowing operations reduced traffic flow. Public transit schedules were also affected at times as crews worked to clear tracks, platforms, and access roads.

Cleanup operations continued after snowfall ended as cold temperatures limited melting, allowing snowpack to persist across sidewalks, parking areas, and residential streets. Snowbanks narrowed roadways and restricted visibility at intersections, adding to safety concerns even after the storm concluded.

Residents were urged to use caution while shoveling and to allow extra time for travel as crews continued snow removal operations. Pedestrian conditions remained hazardous in some areas due to compacted snow and ice.

The January 23–26 storm ranks among the most significant snowfall events of the season for Rhode Island, contributing meaningfully to above-normal seasonal snowfall totals and reinforcing the intensity of this winter pattern across southern New England.
