Massachusetts – A prolonged winter storm delivered widespread heavy snowfall across Massachusetts from January 23 through January 26, with top totals exceeding 20 inches, according to compiled storm reports.

The highest snowfall total reported in the state was 20.5 inches in Middleton, 1 mile south, making it the snowiest reported location in Massachusetts during the multi-day event. Several additional communities recorded totals at or near 20 inches, underscoring the storm’s intensity and broad reach.

Among other top totals, Holden recorded 20.0 inches, while Newburyport also measured 20.0 inches. Grafton and Ludlow (1 mile south) each reported 19.0 inches, and Agawam (3 miles west) measured 18.5 inches.

Snowfall totals of 18 inches or more were common across central Massachusetts. New Braintree (2 miles northeast) and Princeton (1 mile west) each recorded 18.0 inches. At Worcester Regional Airport, observers measured 17.5 inches, while Ipswich (1 mile northeast) reported 17.2 inches.

In eastern Massachusetts, Boston recorded 16.7 inches, reflecting the storm’s sustained impact even along the immediate coast.

Snow accumulated steadily over several days rather than falling in a single burst, resulting in prolonged hazardous travel conditions. Major corridors including Interstates 90, 93, and 495 were impacted at various times, particularly during overnight and early morning periods.

Cleanup operations continued after snowfall ended as cold temperatures limited melting and allowed deep snowpack to persist. Narrowed roadways, snow-covered sidewalks, and restricted parking remained widespread issues.

The January 23–26 storm ranks among the most significant winter snow events of the season for Massachusetts, contributing substantially to above-normal seasonal snowfall totals statewide.
