Kaktovik, Alaska – Dangerous blizzard conditions are expected to slam Alaska’s Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast beginning Sunday night, creating near-whiteout conditions and making travel potentially life-threatening for coastal communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast, including Flaxman Island, Point Thomson, and Kaktovik. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 60 mph, combining with falling and blowing snow to sharply reduce visibility.

While snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively light, generally up to one inch, forecasters stress that powerful winds will be the primary hazard. Visibility could drop below a quarter mile for extended periods, especially in open and coastal areas where blowing snow can quickly create whiteout conditions.

Local officials warn that even short trips could become dangerous once conditions deteriorate. Blowing snow may obscure roads, ice trails, and landmarks, increasing the risk of disorientation and exposure. Residents are urged to secure loose items, prepare for possible disruptions, and avoid unnecessary travel.

Emergency managers strongly recommend restricting travel to emergencies only. Anyone who must be outdoors should carry a winter survival kit and ensure communication devices are fully charged.

Blizzard conditions are expected to persist into Monday evening, with warnings remaining in effect through that time. Additional statements may follow if conditions intensify or extend beyond the current timeline.
