Atlanta, Georgia – A dangerous ice storm continued to grip much of north and central Georgia Sunday afternoon, with worsening road conditions and a growing risk of power outages expected through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday for a broad stretch of the state, including metro Atlanta, north Georgia, and parts of east-central Georgia. Additional ice accumulations between one-tenth and four-tenths of an inch are expected, with wind gusts reaching 20 to 35 mph overnight.
The combination of ice and wind poses a serious threat to power lines and tree limbs. Officials warn that widespread and potentially long-lasting power outages are possible, especially in areas such as Atlanta, Marietta, Gainesville, Athens, Lawrenceville, Dahlonega, and Blairsville. Roads are expected to become increasingly slick, with bridges and overpasses turning hazardous first.
State and local agencies urge residents to delay all travel if possible. Drivers who must be on the road should reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and watch closely for black ice, particularly after sunset. Charging devices, securing alternative heat sources, and preparing for outages are strongly recommended.
Ice impacts are expected to persist through the Monday morning commute. Officials caution that additional advisories could follow if conditions worsen or linger longer than expected.
