Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – A prolonged surge of Arctic air continues to grip Oklahoma and northern Texas, keeping dangerous cold in place across much of the region as residents face another stretch of hazardous wind chills.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST Monday for most of Oklahoma and portions of northern Texas. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 15 below zero, creating conditions that can quickly lead to hypothermia without proper protection.
The warning spans a large area, including Oklahoma City, Norman, Edmond, Enid, Stillwater, Lawton, Altus, Ardmore, Duncan, Elk City, Ponca City, Shawnee, and Wichita Falls in Texas. Rural communities and open country areas face added risk due to longer travel distances and limited access to shelter if vehicles fail in the extreme cold.
Emergency managers urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face coverings. Anyone working outside or traveling should take frequent breaks in warm shelter. Checking on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat is strongly encouraged.
The bitter cold is expected to persist through the weekend before gradually easing later Monday morning. Officials caution that additional cold-related advisories could be issued if Arctic air lingers longer than expected.
