Peoria, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois should prepare for increasingly slippery roads starting Saturday afternoon as a prolonged snow event settles into the region and lingers through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from noon Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday for much of central Illinois, including Peoria, Tazewell, McLean, Woodford, Fulton, Mason, Marshall, and Schuyler counties. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with steady snowfall developing this afternoon and continuing at times through Sunday.

Travel impacts are expected to grow through the evening and overnight hours, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Cities such as Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, Pekin, Canton, Eureka, and Havana could see roads become snow-covered as temperatures remain cold enough for accumulation. Rural highways and secondary roads may become slick more quickly, especially during periods of steadier snow.

Illinois Department of Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel when snowfall rates increase. Real-time road conditions are available at gettingaroundillinois.com.

Snow is expected to taper Sunday evening, though slick spots may linger into Sunday night. Officials note additional advisories could be issued if snowfall trends higher or travel conditions deteriorate.
