Oklahoma wakes up to swirling flakes, fogged headlights, and a sharp bite in the air.
Snow squeaks under boots. Wind slips through layers. Conditions are already deteriorating across central Oklahoma as a major winter system tightens its grip.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, through Sunday midday. Heavy snow continues across the region, with 6 inches or more likely, and locally higher totals possible north and west of the metro. Some southern areas could also see light ice accumulation, adding to travel concerns.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, an Extreme Cold Warning is also in place through Monday morning. Wind chills may drop as low as 15 degrees below zero, especially late tonight and again early Monday. Prolonged exposure could quickly become dangerous.

Snow showers persist through today and into Sunday morning. Visibility drops quickly during heavier bursts, especially along I-35, I-40, I-44, and the Kilpatrick Turnpike. Bridges and overpasses ice first. Travel could become very difficult, even for short trips.

Temperatures struggle to climb. Afternoon readings remain in the teens, with little melting expected. As traffic compacts snow, slick and icy layers develop underneath. Flash freezing becomes a growing issue after any brief breaks in snowfall.

By Monday, skies clear but the cold deepens. Morning lows fall near zero, keeping untreated roads hazardous. Crews may need extra time to improve conditions as chemicals lose effectiveness in extreme cold.

Looking toward midweek, temperatures slowly recover into the 30s, while precipitation chances ease. Even so, the broader pattern remains colder than normal across Oklahoma.

Plan ahead now. Delay unnecessary travel. Dress in layers and keep emergency supplies nearby. Are roads already slick where you are?
