Dodge City, Kansas – Travel across southwest and central Kansas is expected to become increasingly dangerous beginning Friday evening as a winter storm spreads heavy snow across the region, creating slick roads and reduced visibility through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from Friday evening through early Sunday morning for much of southwest and central Kansas. Snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches are expected across counties including Ford, Pratt, Meade, Stafford, Kiowa, Barber, Clark, Pawnee, and Hodgeman. Farther north, including Ellis, Trego, Ness, Lane, and Gray counties, snowfall totals of 4 to 7 inches are likely, with locally higher amounts possible.
Snow is expected to develop Friday evening and continue steadily overnight, worsening road conditions across major routes such as U.S. 50, U.S. 54, U.S. 283, and U.S. 400. Travel may become very difficult at times, especially late Friday night into Saturday as accumulations increase and untreated roads become snow-packed.
Kansas Department of Transportation crews will be monitoring conditions, but residents are urged to delay non-essential travel and prepare for prolonged winter driving conditions. Anyone who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, blankets, and a flashlight. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through early Sunday, and additional advisories could be issued as conditions evolve.
