Springfield, Missouri – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Springfield and much of southwest Missouri, with heavy snowfall and dangerous travel conditions expected through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the warning runs from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday. Snowfall totals of 7 to 14 inches are expected across the Springfield area, with the highest amounts likely along and south of Interstate 44. Some locations near the Missouri–Arkansas border may also see periods of sleet mixing in.
Forecasters warn that very cold temperatures and subzero wind chills will combine with heavy snow to create life-threatening travel conditions. Roads may become snow-covered and impassable at times, especially from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon, when the greatest impacts are expected.
The National Weather Service’s Winter Storm Severity Index shows major travel impacts across southern Missouri, including Springfield, Joplin, Branson, and surrounding communities. Blowing snow, reduced visibility, and prolonged road closures are possible.
Officials strongly urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for delays or closures, and ensure vehicles and homes are winter-ready. Power disruptions are possible where snow accumulates heavily on infrastructure.
This storm may significantly affect commuters, students, and weekend travel plans across the Springfield metro area.
Residents should continue monitoring official National Weather Service updates, as snowfall totals may be refined with additional forecast updates.
