Midwest Region – A major winter storm is expected to produce the greatest snowfall totals—exceeding 8 inches—from Missouri through Illinois and into Indiana by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect as confidence increases in a broad swath of heavy snow developing late Friday night and continuing through the weekend. Forecast guidance indicates widespread snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches are likely within the primary snow band, with locally higher amounts possible.

The heaviest snow is expected to stretch from southeast Missouri through southern and central Illinois into portions of southern Indiana. Forecasters note a sharp cutoff on the northern edge of the snow shield, while areas farther south may see a mix of sleet or freezing rain, potentially compounding travel impacts.

Snowfall rates may be heavy at times, particularly Saturday into Saturday night, reducing visibility and making roads hazardous. The National Weather Service advises that travel should be avoided if possible during the height of the storm, as conditions may deteriorate quickly.

By Sunday, snow is expected to gradually taper from west to east, though lingering impacts are likely due to snow-covered and icy roads. Cleanup and recovery efforts may extend into early next week, especially in areas receiving the highest totals.

The prolonged nature of the storm may affect commuters, students, and weekend travel plans across the region, with the greatest disruptions expected where snowfall exceeds 8 inches.

Residents are urged to monitor official National Weather Service updates and prepare for extended winter weather impacts through Sunday.
