Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties, Alabama – Dangerous ice accumulation is expected to impact northwest Alabama from Friday night through Sunday night, prompting an Ice Storm Warning.

According to the National Weather Service, ice accumulations ranging from 0.25 to 1 inch are possible, with the highest amounts expected in far northwest Alabama. The combination of freezing rain and sleet is likely to create extremely hazardous travel conditions and may result in power outages due to downed trees and power lines.

Areas under the Ice Storm Warning include Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties, where roads may become impassable at times. Officials strongly advise avoiding travel during the storm, particularly overnight and early morning periods when icing is most likely.

Farther east, including Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, Calhoun and Cleburne counties, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. Forecasts indicate ice accumulations up to 0.25 inch and snow or sleet amounts around one-half inch, though forecasters note high uncertainty in precipitation type and totals.

Much of north and northeastern Alabama, including the Huntsville and Cullman areas, is under a Winter Weather Advisory, with lighter ice amounts and minor snow or sleet possible. Even small accumulations could lead to slick bridges, overpasses and untreated roads.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham cautions that lingering moisture may refreeze Sunday night as colder air moves in, prolonging travel hazards even after precipitation ends.

Commuters, students and essential workers should prepare for delays and possible power disruptions through the weekend.

Residents are urged to closely monitor official National Weather Service updates as conditions evolve.
