Kansas City, KS – Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility could bring east central and northeast Kansas to a crawl starting Friday night, as a winter storm pushes through the region with up to 7 inches of accumulation expected by Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 6 p.m. Friday and lasts through 6 p.m. Sunday. Impacted areas include Johnson, Miami, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, and Atchison counties, where snowfall will intensify Saturday morning and continue steadily into the weekend.
Travel across key corridors such as I-35, US-69, and K-7 may become treacherous by early Saturday. Drivers in Olathe, Leavenworth, Shawnee, and Overland Park are urged to avoid non-essential trips and prepare for slick conditions and possible delays.
If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend packing emergency supplies like food, water, and flashlights. Power outages aren’t expected to be widespread, but heavy snow may weigh on trees and power lines in rural areas.
Road conditions can be monitored by dialing 511 in Kansas. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued if snowfall rates intensify.
