Emporia, Kansas – A developing winter storm could bring accumulating snow and dangerously cold wind chills to eastern Kansas beginning Friday evening, raising concerns for travel and outdoor safety through late Saturday night. Roads across the region may quickly become slick as snowfall increases, with exposure risks growing if drivers become stranded.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Lyon, Osage, Franklin, Coffey, and Anderson counties. Snow totals between 4 and 7 inches are possible, accompanied by wind chills ranging from 10 to 20 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Emporia, Ottawa, Burlington, Garnett, Osage City, Lyndon, and Coffey County communities are expected to see periods of steady snow, with bridges and overpasses freezing first. Travel along I-35, U.S. 50, and regional highways could become difficult, especially overnight and during periods of heavier snowfall.

Emergency officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel, prepare winter survival kits for vehicles, and dress in layers if venturing outside. Blankets, flashlights, food, water, and charged devices are recommended in case of power issues or travel delays.

The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through late Saturday night, and upgrades to warnings may follow as snowfall amounts and timing become clearer.
