Jackson, Mississippi – Dangerous cold and a potential mix of wintry precipitation could create hazardous conditions across Mississippi beginning Friday night and lasting through the weekend, with the greatest impacts expected in the northwest part of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, confidence has increased that much colder air will settle into the region Friday night, bringing wind chills near 15 degrees or colder in parts of north and central Mississippi. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the mid-teens to mid-20s, with daytime highs struggling to rise above freezing in the northwest.
Forecasters say a mix of winter weather, including freezing rain, sleet, and snow, is likely across northern counties, including areas near Greenville, Greenwood, and Yazoo City. Farther south and east, including Jackson, Brookhaven, and Meridian, wintry precipitation remains possible, though confidence in exact types and amounts is still evolving.
Travel could become hazardous on untreated roads and bridges, particularly late Friday night through Saturday. Gusty winds combined with cold temperatures may increase the risk of hypothermia for anyone exposed for extended periods. There is also concern for exposed pipes and infrastructure as temperatures remain below freezing.
Residents are urged to limit unnecessary travel, protect pets and pipes, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the weekend approaches, and officials recommend monitoring updates closely.
