BOSTON — A surge of Arctic air combined with strengthening northwest winds will bring the harshest cold of the season to eastern Massachusetts and much of New England, with dangerous wind chills settling in by Friday morning and lingering into the weekend.
The National Weather Service says winds will increase through Thursday and Thursday night, peaking Friday with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph. While actual temperatures will fall into the teens and lower 20s, the persistent wind will make it feel far colder, especially during the morning commute. Wind chill values are expected to drop into the single digits across most of southern New England, with below-zero readings possible in higher elevations and inland areas.
Forecasters emphasize that the cold will be deceptive. Temperatures alone may not appear extreme, but the wind will dramatically amplify the impact. Exposed skin could be at risk for frostbite in under 30 minutes in some locations, particularly early Friday. Coastal and elevated areas will see the strongest gusts, adding to travel concerns for high-profile vehicles.
The bitter pattern shows little sign of breaking quickly. Cold air is expected to remain entrenched through the weekend and into next week, reinforcing the message that winter conditions are firmly in place. Residents are urged to dress for wind exposure, secure loose outdoor items, and take precautions to protect pets, pipes and vulnerable neighbors.
