East Tennessee – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, with heavy snow and strong winds expected to impact high-elevation travel through 11 a.m. EST Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
The warning covers the Blount Smoky Mountains, Cocke Smoky Mountains, and Sevier Smoky Mountains, including Gatlinburg, Elkmont, Hartford, and Cades Cove. Snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are forecast mainly at or above 3,000 feet, with locally higher totals possible on the highest peaks.
Forecasters reported that wind gusts up to 40 mph are likely, particularly across exposed ridges and higher elevations. These gusts, combined with heavy snow, may lead to blowing snow, reduced visibility, and falling tree limbs.
The National Weather Service warned that slippery and hazardous road conditions are expected, especially during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Mountain roads, park routes, and secondary highways are most at risk for rapid deterioration.
Officials urged travelers to avoid unnecessary trips into higher elevations. Those who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and to check the latest road conditions by calling 511.
Snow intensity and impacts may vary with elevation, but conditions can worsen quickly in the Smoky Mountains as temperatures fall overnight. Residents and visitors should continue to monitor updates from the National Weather Service as the storm progresses.
