Thief River Falls, Minnesota – A period of freezing rain early Thursday morning is creating icy road conditions and travel impacts across the area.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. for far northwest Minnesota. Light freezing rain developed early this morning, with surface temperatures hovering near 32 degrees, allowing ice to form on untreated roads.

Even small amounts of freezing rain can make roads, bridges, and overpasses slick. Drivers may encounter sudden changes in traction, especially during the morning commute.

The National Weather Service notes that precipitation amounts are expected to remain light, but impacts may still be significant due to the icy conditions. Road conditions may vary over short distances.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check current road conditions before heading out. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this morning as temperatures rise and freezing rain ends.
