Birmingham, Alabama – A cooler and unsettled weather pattern could bring periods of cold rain to Mississippi and Alabama heading into mid-January, leading to damp conditions and slower travel across the region.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, much of Mississippi and Alabama is expected to see temperatures near to slightly above normal during the January 9–13 period, with precipitation trending near normal. With limited cold air in place, rain is expected to be the primary impact, though persistent cloud cover may keep conditions feeling cooler than average.
Central and northern Alabama, including Birmingham, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa, could see multiple rounds of rain that linger for hours at a time. Wet roads and reduced visibility may affect travel along I-20, I-65, and I-59, especially during morning and evening commutes.
Across Mississippi, including Jackson, Meridian, and Tupelo, periods of rain are also expected, creating slick conditions on major routes such as I-55 and I-20. Southern sections near the Gulf Coast may see steadier rain at times, combined with breezy conditions that add to the raw, chilly feel.
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and remain cautious on wet roadways. Additional updates or advisories may be issued closer to mid-January if rain coverage becomes more widespread or persistent across Mississippi and Alabama.
