Atlanta, Georgia – A cooler and unsettled weather pattern could bring periods of cold rain to Georgia heading into mid-January, creating damp conditions and slower travel across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, Georgia is expected to see temperatures near to slightly above normal during the January 9–13 period, while precipitation trends near normal. With limited support for winter weather, rain is expected to be the primary impact, though persistent cloud cover and north breezes may keep conditions feeling chilly.
North and central Georgia, including Atlanta, Athens, and Rome, could see multiple rounds of rain that linger for several hours at a time. Wet roads and reduced visibility may affect travel along I-75, I-85, and I-20, particularly during morning and evening commutes.
Across southern Georgia, including Macon, Valdosta, and Albany, rain is also expected at times, with cooler temperatures limiting any thunder risk. Coastal areas from Savannah to Brunswick may see periods of rain combined with breezy conditions, creating a raw feel near the shoreline.
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and remain cautious on wet roadways. Additional updates or advisories may be issued closer to mid-January if rainfall coverage becomes more widespread or persistent.
