Minneapolis–St. Paul, Minnesota – Drivers across central and eastern Minnesota could encounter slick roads Sunday afternoon as freezing rain and sleet move into the region before gradually changing to snow, creating pockets of hazardous travel.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, light ice accumulations up to a few hundredths of an inch are possible across much of central and eastern Minnesota as temperatures hover near freezing. The highest risk for icing stretches from the Twin Cities metro eastward toward western Wisconsin, where precipitation is expected to transition to snow later in the afternoon.

Snow totals are forecast to remain light, but western Wisconsin could see accumulations of one to three inches by Sunday evening. Even small amounts of ice and snow may lead to slippery conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, especially along I-94, I-35, and Highway 52. Gusty winds are not expected to be a major factor, but fluctuating temperatures could allow surfaces to refreeze after sunset.

Saturday begins quietly with scattered flurries early in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, followed by dry but cold conditions. Sunday’s wintry mix arrives as temperatures trend upward into the upper 20s and 30s, increasing the chance for freezing rain before colder air supports snow later in the day.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time Sunday afternoon and evening. Road conditions may change quickly as precipitation type shifts.

Wintry precipitation tapers off Sunday night, with quieter weather expected Monday. Additional advisories may be issued if ice amounts increase.
