Richmond, Virginia – A fast-moving cold front is sliding across Virginia on New Year’s Day, bringing a brief chance for light snow showers in parts of the state while keeping temperatures close to seasonal norms. Most of central Virginia, including Richmond, will see a cold but manageable start to 2026 with limited disruption expected.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the best chance for snow showers this morning is focused across the Northern Neck and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Any snow that does fall is expected to produce very little to no accumulation, keeping major road impacts unlikely. Cloud cover will linger behind the front, but widespread winter weather issues are not anticipated.

Across central Virginia, daytime temperatures will top out in the upper 30s to low 40s. Richmond is expected to reach the low 40s, while areas farther south toward Petersburg and Emporia could briefly climb into the mid to upper 40s. Farther east, including Williamsburg and the Hampton Roads region, highs will stay in the low to mid 40s under partly cloudy skies.

Drivers traveling early this morning in northeastern Virginia or along coastal routes should remain alert for brief visibility reductions during passing snow showers. Even without accumulation, slick spots can form on bridges and overpasses during colder stretches.

As skies partially clear tonight, colder air will settle in quickly. Lows are expected to fall into the mid to upper 20s across much of Virginia, with low 20s likely across Maryland. Residents are urged to protect pets, cover exposed pipes, and use caution with space heaters.

The cold, dry pattern remains in place into Friday, with quiet weather expected and no additional advisories currently posted. More updates could be issued if conditions change later today.
