Binghamton, New York – A winter storm is expected to bring widespread snowfall of 6 to 12 inches to parts of central New York from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, prompting expanded winter storm warnings across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, Winter Storm Warnings now include Broome, Cortland, Chenango, and Otsego counties, while warnings and winter weather advisories elsewhere remain unchanged. Snow is forecast to begin Friday afternoon, spreading from west to east, with the heaviest snowfall expected late this afternoon through the evening hours.

Forecast snowfall maps show 6 to 8 inches possible across much of the warned area, with localized totals exceeding 10 inches if a narrow band of heavier snow develops. The Weather Service notes that this band could form somewhere within central New York, potentially producing locally higher snowfall amounts than currently forecast.

Forecasters also highlight forecast uncertainty, particularly across the west-central Southern Tier of New York, where sleet and pockets of freezing rain could mix in. If this occurs, snow accumulations may be lower in those areas, though travel conditions could still be hazardous due to ice and slush.

Snowfall rates may be heavy at times during the evening, leading to rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Reduced visibility and snow-covered roads are expected, especially during peak snowfall periods.

Snow is expected to taper late Friday night into Saturday morning, though lingering impacts may continue into the early hours of the day. The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor forecast updates, allow extra travel time, and use caution if traveling during the storm.
