Billings, MT – Very strong and potentially damaging winds are expected to impact Billings and much of south-central Montana beginning Tuesday night and continuing through Wednesday, raising concerns for hazardous travel and possible property damage.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, winds will continue to increase overnight before peaking Wednesday, particularly across western gap areas and foothills. Wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph are possible, with the strongest winds expected near Livingston, Big Timber, Red Lodge, and along exposed stretches of Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 191.

Forecasters warn that dangerous crosswinds could make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, RVs, and trailers. The strongest winds are expected from late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon, with periodic gusts exceeding 60 mph even in lower elevations.

The National Weather Service also cautions that strong winds could cause tree damage, blow around unsecured outdoor objects, and lead to isolated power outages. Residents are urged to secure loose items such as holiday decorations, trash bins, and outdoor furniture ahead of the strongest gusts.

In the Billings area, wind gusts between 55 and 70 mph are possible, while nearby foothill locations could see higher peaks. Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Wednesday evening, though breezy conditions may linger into the night.

Officials recommend monitoring road conditions and forecasts closely, especially for those planning to travel through wind-prone corridors. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, keep both hands on the wheel, and be prepared for sudden gusts.

Additional updates or advisories may be issued as confidence increases in the strongest wind impacts.
