Stevens Pass, WA – A powerful winter storm is set to impact the central Washington mountains after a Winter Storm Warning was issued Monday afternoon for Western Chelan County, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions beginning Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, the warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday through 10 p.m. PST Wednesday, with snowfall totals ranging from 8 to 18 inches in higher elevations, including Stevens Pass and Holden Village. Lighter amounts of 4 to 8 inches are expected near Stehekin.
Forecasters say winds could gust between 30 and 50 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow that may sharply reduce visibility. Near-whiteout conditions are possible at times, especially in exposed areas and along mountain passes.
The storm is expected to significantly impact travel during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commute periods. Snow-covered roads, gusty winds, and falling tree debris could make driving extremely hazardous or impossible at times.
The warning was issued at 2:07 p.m. Monday, upgrading an earlier winter storm watch as confidence increased in both snowfall totals and wind impacts. Officials warn that strong winds may also cause tree damage and isolated power disruptions in mountain communities.
Drivers traveling through Stevens Pass or surrounding mountain routes are urged to reconsider nonessential trips. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including extra food, water, warm clothing, and a flashlight, in case of delays or road closures.
The Washington State Department of Transportation recommends checking pass conditions frequently, as restrictions or closures may be implemented quickly if conditions worsen. The latest travel updates are available at wsdot.wa.gov/travel.
