Tennessee – Skies clear over Memphis this morning, but the calm hides a sharp December temperature drop on the way. The Mid-South will see one last stretch of mild sunshine before a strong Arctic front cuts temperatures by nearly 40 degrees between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Memphis say highs near 58°F on Friday will quickly give way to morning lows in the teens by Sunday as Arctic air pours south from the Plains. By late Saturday, winds turn north and usher in the coldest air of the season, with Sunday highs struggling to reach 27°F.

This kind of quick cool-down can lead to flash freeze conditions, especially on bridges and shaded roadways where moisture lingers. Residents are urged to protect outdoor pipes, pets, and plants before temperatures tumble. The front will also be accompanied by gusty north winds up to 15 mph, making it feel even colder.

For now, expect mostly sunny skies through Friday, giving way to brisk, dry air by the weekend. Despite the clear weather, travelers on I-40 and I-55 should prepare for cold morning starts and reduced tire traction early Sunday.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Friday: Sunny, high 58°F, low 33°F.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, high 48°F, low 19°F.
  • Sunday: Sunny, high 27°F, low 17°F.
  • Monday: Sunny, high 39°F, low 28°F.
  • Tuesday: Partly sunny, high 47°F.
