GRANT PARK, Ill. – Pet owners are being asked to be on guard after a bat in the County tested positive for rabies.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed last Tuesday a bat the Kankakee County Animal Control retrieved from the 300 block of South Willis Street had tested positive for rabies.

In response to the confirmation, County officials are urging all pet owners to take immediate action to protect their furry companions. It is mandatory for all dogs and cats aged four months and older to be vaccinated against rabies. To ensure compliance and verify the vaccination status of your pets, please contact 815-937-2949.

Rabies, a potentially fatal viral infection, can be transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals. Bats are known carriers of the virus and can easily infiltrate residential spaces.

If you spot a bat within your home, it is crucial to contact Animal Control at 815-937-2949 during regular business hours. For after-hours emergencies, please reach out to Kan Com at 815-933-3324.
