CHICAGO, IL – Northern Illinois residents face a hazardous mix of bitter cold temperatures and sub-zero wind chills through Friday, which will then give way to a chance of accumulating snow showers over the weekend.
A passing cold front is expected to bring Arctic air and significantly colder conditions to the area from Wednesday night through Friday morning. According to the US National Weather Service Chicago Illinois, winds will gust up to 25 mph, driving wind chills as low as -15 to -20 at times on both Thursday and Friday mornings. Sub-zero overnight lows are likely across northwest Illinois, with temperatures remaining well below normal through the end of the workweek. Residents are advised to take precautions against potential frostbite and hypothermia during this period of severe cold.
The extreme cold spell is forecast to precede another potential weather system that could bring accumulating snow to the region on the weekend. The National Weather Service indicates a system may bring accumulating snow to parts of the area this weekend or early next week, with scattered snow showers projected on both Friday and Saturday.
