OMAHA, Neb. – Dense fog and a few early showers could slow morning travel across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa before a beautiful fall weekend arrives. Visibility may drop quickly in rural areas near U.S. Highway 81 and I-80, prompting drivers to use extra caution during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, fog formation remains likely early Wednesday, especially in northeast Nebraska and west-central Iowa. Conditions will improve by midmorning, giving way to partly sunny skies and mild fall air. Another round of scattered showers could develop Friday, bringing brief downpours and gusty winds before a crisp, sunny weekend.

Thursday looks mostly sunny and pleasant with highs in the low 80s — well above average for mid-October. By Friday, clouds build and a 50 percent chance of showers moves in by afternoon, especially along the I-80 corridor between Lincoln and Council Bluffs. Winds may gust over 20 mph during the day, so travelers and those attending outdoor events should plan for changing weather.

The weekend outlook is ideal for pumpkin patches, tailgates, and fall color drives. Saturday and Sunday both feature sunshine, highs in the upper 80s, and cool, clear nights — a perfect early taste of late-fall comfort.

Fog and light rain may return briefly early next week, but temperatures stay mild. Keep headlights on in fog-prone areas and allow extra travel time during early morning commutes through Thursday.
