Portage, IN – Police in northwest Indiana are searching for a 24-year-old man who allegedly fired a gun multiple times after fleeing a vehicle pursuit early Wednesday morning in Portage.

According to the Portage Police Department, the incident began around 1:31 a.m. on September 10 when officers attempted to stop a vehicle near Plaza Avenue and Plymouth Street. The suspect exited the vehicle, allegedly discharged a handgun several times while running on foot, and struck a nearby occupied home.

Authorities identified the suspect as Trayvon Byrd, who is described as 6’5” tall, weighing approximately 190 pounds, and last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. Police said Byrd is considered armed and dangerous, with ties to both Gary and Indianapolis.

Multiple agencies assisted in the search, including Indiana State Police, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, Hobart Police Department, Lake Station Police Department, Gary Police Department, and Porter County Sheriff’s Department. Despite extensive efforts, Byrd was able to evade capture.
