Columbia, S.C. – Sweltering heat will push South Carolina into the mid-90s Friday and Saturday before storms and cooler air move in by late Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, temperatures will rise above average with highs reaching 91 to 94 degrees Friday and Saturday. Clouds will begin to build Saturday, setting the stage for a cold front moving into the Midlands on Sunday. That front will bring scattered showers and isolated storms during the afternoon and evening hours.

The greatest risk for storms will stretch from Columbia east toward Sumter and Orangeburg, with potential impacts on outdoor plans and late-weekend travel. Forecasters caution that lightning and brief downpours may develop, though widespread severe weather is not expected.

By Monday, highs will fall back into the upper 70s, offering a noticeable break from the heat. Residents are advised to stay hydrated through the weekend and take precautions during peak afternoon hours. Outdoor events scheduled for Sunday should have contingency plans in place as showers move through.

Cooler air is expected to linger into early next week, with more comfortable mornings returning to much of the state.
