Peoria, IL – The Peoria Police Department is calling on community members to continue showing up for local students through a series of September events designed to strengthen ties between families, schools and neighborhoods.
According to the department, the initiative, known as “Stand Up. Show Up. Be There.,” began as a simple call to action and has since grown into a citywide movement. Residents are being encouraged to stand at school entrances during morning drop-off times to show children they are supported by their community.
The scheduled September dates include:
- Von Steuben Middle School on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 6:45 a.m. to 7:20 a.m. at the right side entrance.
- Harold B. Dawson Jr. Middle School on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 6:45 a.m. to 7:20 a.m. at the front entrance.
- Annie Jo Gordon Community Learning Center on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 8:10 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the back entrance.
- Dr. Maude A. Sanders Primary School on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 8:10 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the left side entrance.
Peoria Police Chief shared in the announcement that the effort is about building a safer, stronger city by coming together “one school at a time, one child at a time.” The department encouraged those unable to attend these listed events to consider organizing their own gatherings at other schools to keep the initiative growing.
Organizers Jeremy Sargent and Gregory Wilson are available for additional information about participation.
