Fort Wayne, Ind. – A crisp start to Wednesday morning had residents across northern Indiana waking up to temperatures more common in late fall than late August. Fort Wayne bottomed out at 42 degrees, setting a new record low for the date.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, normal lows for this time of year sit around 60 degrees. Jonesville, Michigan, recorded the coldest temperature in the region at 37, while Hoagland, Indiana, dipped to 40. South Bend fell to 44, well below its average late-summer low of 59.

The chill extended across much of the area, with widespread reports in the low 40s from Warsaw, Huntington, Bluffton, and Angola. The unusually cold air mass was fueled by clear skies and calm winds overnight, allowing heat to escape rapidly from the ground.

Drivers faced patches of fog in rural low-lying areas, while homeowners may want to bring in sensitive plants ahead of any additional cool mornings this week. Local utilities report no major service issues, though the sharp temperature drop has many shifting quickly from air conditioners to early-morning heaters.

Cool mornings are expected to linger into the end of the week, with highs gradually rebounding closer to normal by the weekend.
