BOSTON, Mass. – Large waves are pounding the Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastlines this Saturday, creating life-threatening swimming conditions and the risk of localized beach erosion. A High Surf Advisory remains in effect through this evening for Cape Cod, the Islands, and much of the southern New England shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, breakers will generate dangerous rip currents and rough surf, particularly along exposed beaches in Plymouth, New Bedford, Providence, and Nantucket. Winds and wave action will also pose hazards for small craft operating offshore.

Beachgoers are urged to avoid entering the water, as strong currents could overwhelm even experienced swimmers. Local emergency officials also warn that beach erosion may affect some access points along Cape Cod and Rhode Island’s southern coast.

The high surf threat is expected to ease later tonight, though another system early next week could bring renewed wave activity.
