Manteo, N.C. – Despite a tropical storm warning in effect for Dare County, forecasters say the risk of tornadoes from Tropical Storm Erin remains low as the system moves north overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, conditions are “unfavorable for tornadoes” in mainland communities including Manns Harbor, East Lake, and Stumpy Point. Showers and gusty winds may continue through Thursday morning, but no tornadic activity is expected.

Wind remains the primary hazard, with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts near 45 mph. Residents could see broken tree limbs, downed signs, and scattered power outages, particularly in wooded areas. Bridges and rural roadways may be difficult to navigate overnight as debris builds up.

Storm surge flooding is not anticipated, though rough surf and dangerous rip currents will remain a threat along the Outer Banks. Rainfall totals are not expected to increase significantly.

While tornadoes are off the table tonight, officials urge residents to stay alert to changing conditions and listen for any updates. The tropical storm warning stays in effect until winds ease later Thursday.
