Raleigh, NC – Thunderstorms Friday afternoon could pack a punch in the Raleigh area, with heavy rain, possible hail, and strong wind gusts expected to develop after 2 p.m. The National Weather Service warns that some storms may become intense enough to trigger localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the most active window for storms will be between mid-afternoon and early evening Friday, with gusts topping 30 mph possible. Neighborhoods along major routes like I-40, I-440, and U.S. 1 could see slowed traffic and reduced visibility as downpours move through. Outdoor activities and school sports may face last-minute cancellations or delays.

While Saturday brings a lower storm chance, the pattern remains unsettled into early next week, with isolated afternoon thunderstorms possible through Tuesday. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor weather alerts, and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

Another update is expected late Thursday night as confidence grows in Friday’s severe potential.
