San Angelo, Texas – As July closes, sizzling heat grips Abilene, San Angelo, and the greater Big Country region, with afternoon highs soaring into the upper 90s and reaching as high as 103°F in spots like Albany and Sweetwater.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, a weak cold front is drifting south across the Big Country, but the main impact today will be a shift to north winds at 5 to 10 mph—offering little relief from the heat. Afternoon humidity levels and variable winds may spark isolated showers or thunderstorms north of a Roby-to-Albany line, especially late this afternoon and evening.
Cities along US-277 and I-20, including Abilene, Haskell, and Ballinger, are expected to see temperatures topping 100°. Residents should avoid outdoor work during peak heat, drink plenty of water, and ensure pets have shade and fresh water. Drivers should watch for sudden, brief downpours on rural highways north of Roby.
With heat advisories in place and only a slim chance of storms, most of the region remains dry and dangerously hot. Stay weather-aware and prepare for more heat through the week—additional advisories may be issued as the new month begins.
